At any level, walks can be a killer. Especially in close games and late in games. The Virginia Tech baseball team found that out the hard way this weekend in their opening ACC series of the 2025 season against Georgia Tech.
On Friday, the Hokies took a 3-2 lead into the top of the ninth inning, only to walk the first two Georgia Tech batters and both of those walks came around to score in a 4-3 win. On Sunday afternoon, the series was knotted at one game a piece after the Hokies won Game 2 on Saturday and was tied 6-6 and you guessed it, the Hokies walked the first two batters and true to form for the second game in three days, both walks came around to score in an 8-6 Yellow Jackets win.
This was a disappointing result this weekend for Virginia Tech as they should have won two-out-of-three games and maybe could have swept the series, but their pitching, mainly the bullpen, let them down. Offensively, they did enough to win the series and maybe all three games, but walks were the difference and timely hitting from the Yellow Jackets.
Virginia Tech trailed most of Game 3 on Sunday, but went hitless from the third inning until the bottom of the seventh when Ben Watson tied the game with an RBI bloop single. In the top of the eighth inning with two outs and nobody on, Georgia Tech loaded the bases, but the Hokies got out of it. In the bottom half of the inning, Virginia Tech loaded the bases with two outs, but failed to push across the go-ahead run. The Yellow jackets didn't miss their chance in the top of the ninth.
Virginia Tech fell to 11-5 and will travel to James Madison on Tuesday for a non-conference game before heading to North Carolina State next weekend for their second ACC series of the season.
