Two weekends ago, the Virginia Tech baseball team opened a few eyes after taking two out of three games against 16th-ranked Louisville in Blacksburg. It was a big ACC series win for the Hokies who are trying to build a resume for the NCAA Tournament.
If you thought that was an impressive weekend, then just wait. After picking a non-conference road win at Radford last week in a mid-week game, Virginia Tech traveled to Winston-Salem for a three-game series against 16th-ranked Wake Forest. Going into the series, the Demon Deacons were one of the best teams at home and difficult to beat at the Couch.
Don’t tell Virginia Tech or head coach John Szefc.
The Hokies went in and battled toe-to-toe and pitch-for-pitch with the Demon Deacons, and when the dust settled, Virginia Tech boarded their bus for the ride back to Blacksburg after completing a three-game sweep. It wasn’t that they swept Wake Forest, but it was how they did it, and for the first time this year, Baseball America noticed.
Virginia Tech cracks Baseball America Top 25
For the first time in 2025, Baseball America ranked Virginia Tech in the Top 25, coming in at No. 25 in their latest poll. Winning a series at Wake Forest is a feat, but sweeping a series is a major feat that not too many teams do. They set the tone in Game 1 with a nine-run first inning, thanks to a number of walks, and then closed the weekend with a four-run top of the ninth for a 6-5 victory that completed the sweep.

After playing Radford in another mid-week game this week, the Hokies will head to South Bend for a three-game ACC series against Notre Dame in a series where you have to find a way to win at least two games and keep the momentum going.
