After dropping the first two games of their three-game ACC series at North Carolina State, the Virginia Tech baseball team was looking to avoid being swept on Saturday night. After dropping Game 1, 11-1, on Friday night, the Hokies dropped Game 2 on Saturday afternoon, 6-3, Tech was looking to salvage a game that was moved up a day because of expected weather in Raleigh on Sunday.
Virginia Tech had a lead in Game 2 going to the late innings, but four Wolpack runs allowed them to win the series. In the series' final, the Hokies were not going to be denied a victory and they did it impressively.
Virginia Tech scores a sixth-inning touchdown against NC State
Tied 6-6 entering the top of sixth, Virginia Tech put up 14 runs, with 10 of those runs coming with two outs. That's unthinkable at any level of baseball, never mind college. They settled for a 20-8 win to improve to 13-7 heading back to Blacksburg and 2-4 in the ACC.
It was an insane sixth inning, to say the least. Virginia Tech was issued seven walks, they had five singles, two doubles, a home run, and scored a run on a balk. They did strikeout twice in the frame and had a runner cut down at the plate for the third out. Still, 14 runs in one inning is something not always seen these days at any level. To cap things off, Cam Pittman singled to center and the ball was misplayed by the NC State centerfielder and turned into a Little League home run.

It was the most runs scored in an inning by Virginia Tech since they put up 14 in the 2022 Blacksburg Regional against Columbia.
Virginia Tech returns home to host VCU on Tuesday at 4 in a non-conference game before Louisville comes in next weekend for a three-game weekend ACC series. Avoiding sweeps are nice, but sooner or later, if the Hokies want to be an NCAA Tournament team, they need to. flip the script and win at least two out of three games in some of these conference series.
