We are just about two and a half weeks away from the season opener for the Virginia Tech football team against South Carolina in Atlanta on Aug. 31. The Hokies are almost halfway through camp, and there are still a lot of things that head coach Brent Pry and his staff need to figure out.
One of those things is who is going to handle the running back duties with Bhayshul Tuten off to the NFL with the Jacksonville Jaguars and Malachi Thomas leaving for Purdue in the Transfer Portal. Some young backs are returning, but there are also some additions made to the roster through he portal. As is the case in camp every summer, there are going to be injuries, but it appears that Pry has avoided a pair of big injuries to two key running backs.
Virginia Tech football coach Brent Pry gives injury updates on two running backs
Bowling Green transfer Terion Stewart and Coastal Carolina transfer Brayndon Bennett are two experienced backs who are entering their first seasons in Blacksburg, and both are expected to be in the mix and get a lot of handoffs this fall. Both players were banged up on Wednesday, but it appears that the Hokies have avoided major injuries with both players.
After practice, Pry said that Stewart started practice, tweaked something, but after being checked out by the medical team, he returned to practice. Bennett suffered a bruised knee, although it doesn't appear to be anything too serious, according to Virginia Tech's fourth-year head coach.

Injuries are going to happen, but right now, with South Carolina looming in just 18 days, the Hokies can't afford to lose either of their two transfer running backs for any amount of time. That is a position that the Hokies have some underrated players from the portal, and health will be a key over the next couple of weeks.
