After a handful is players from the Virginia Tech secondary hit the Transfer Portal, it suddenly became a position of need for new coach James Franklin and defensive coordinator Brent Pry. The Hokies lost Dante Lovett to the portal when Pry was fired as head coach in September, and that was a huge loss. He has since committed to UCLA.

Knowing that there was a need, Franklin has been able to address these needs over the last two days. On Tuesday night, he picked up a commitment from UConn defensive back Cam Chadwick. On Wednesday, Franklin picked up his second portal commitment in the secondary in as many days.

Virginia Tech edges out SEC program for Troy transfer

Troy cornerback Jaquez White was coveted by both Tennessee and Virginia Tech in the Transfer Portal. When the dust settled, the Hokies ended up edging out the Volunteers for the 6-foot-1, 190-pound White.

This is a huge win for Virginia Tech to land White. He has been a mainstay in the Trojans' secondary, and in 2025, the Georgia native registered 67 tackles, 53 solo, one sack, three interceptions, and broke up 11 passes. He had a season-high eight tackles against Nicholls in the season opener, then he had three tackles in Week 2 at Clemson. He had seven tackles against Memphis in Week 3 and registered six tackles three times, including once against Old Dominion.

White lands at a Virginia Tech program that turns out NFL defensive back's and he should flourish in the Hokies' defensive scheme. Adding transfers to the secondary is huge for the first two levels of the defense next season, and Franklin has been adding experienced players into the secondary for Pry. It wouldn't be surprising to see one more added in the coming days, but a portal win over Tennessee is always eye-opening. He has one year of eligibility remaining.
