There were a couple of needs that Virginia Tech football coach James Franklin had when the Transfer Portal opened. Quarterback was one need, but so wasn't help in the secondary. Landing some impact players was a must for the Hokies' first-year coach.
After some players hit the portal in the secondary, Franklin is getting new defensive coordinator Brent Pry some help, and on Tuesday night, he landed an addition through the portal, and it's an experienced one.
UConn DB Cam Chadwick commits to Virginia Tech
After three years at UConn under former coach Jim Mora, who recently left to go to Colorado State, Cam Chadwick entered the portal, and after visiting Virginia Tech, he committed to the Hokies. He signed with the Huskies in the Class of 2023 and redshirted his freshman season. He played the last two years for UConn and is coming off a big 2025 season for the Huskies.

After racking up 47 tackles and two interceptions in 2024, Chadwick had an even better 2025 season. He registered 66 tackles and picked off four passes, and had a sack. He registered a season-high nine tackles against Delaware and had seven against UAB with three interceptions, and against FIU. Against Syracuse, he had six tackles, and he also had six against Duke in UConn's upset.
Chadwick should step right in and make an impact next season. The New Jersey native also took a visit to TCU, but ended up picking the Hokies. Virginia Tech has lost Christian Ellis, who committed to Virginia, Dante Lovett, who has committed to UCLA, and Caleb Brown, who have entered the Transfer Portal. Joseph Reddish is also gone after one year in Blacksburg.
Chadwick could have made the easy decision to follow Mora out to Colorado State, but instead he's staying closer to home and coming to Virginia Tech. This is a nice addition for 2026.
