On Wednesday, the Senior Bowl released its first-ever Top 300 for the upcoming season, which highlights some of the top draft-eligible players. One year after having a handful of players make the list, Virginia Tech had just two players, quarterback Kyron Drones and wide receiver and Wake Forest transfer Donavon Greene, who made the list.
It comes as no surprise that the SEC led the Power 4 schools with 109 players cracking the list, with the Big Ten next with 68, the ACC third with 53, and the Big 12 bringing up the rear with 43. There were 53 underclassmen named to the list as well.
As for the two Hokies' players, it isn't surprising to see Drones on there in what is a huge bounce-back season for the former Baylor transfer, who had his 2024 campaign cut short with injuries. He is fully healthy and ready to go this season and is the biggest piece to Virginia Tech's offense under first-year offensive coordinator Philip Montgomery.
Drones got some draft hype last offseason after working out with Cam Ward, who was the first overall pick of the Tennessee Titans after a standout season at Miami, and Shedeur Sanders of Colorado, who slipped to the 144th pick and the Cleveland Browns after being ready to hear his name called in the first round. Drones can raise his draft stock with a big bounce-back season in 2025.
Greene, who battled injuries during his time in Winston-Salem and was limited to 23 catches for 380 yards and three touchdowns in 2024. At Virginia Tech, he will be a big target for Drones in the offense, and fully healthy, he could be a player who comes in and makes a big difference. Just because a player is listed doesn't guarantee them an invite in January, but you have to think a big season from Drones would get him an invite.
