This week is the ACC's turn for Media Week, with the Kickoff in Charlotte, with Virginia Tech coach Brent Pry and four players, Kyron Drones, Donovan Greene, Kelvin Gilliam, and Jaden Keller, meeting with the media on Thursday. It's just another sign, as we hit the middle of the summer, that college football camps are just around the corner.
It will be very interesting to see what is said by Pry and the players, as the vibes around the program are a lot different this year than they were at this time last summer. The Hokies were one of the talks of college football and a darling for the new 12-team College Football Playoff, but things went off the rails in Week 1 at Vanderbilt with an overtime loss, which ended with a familiar record.
Virginia Tech football season-opener is just six weeks away against South Carolina in Atlanta
This is a very difficult opener for the Hokies against the Gamecocks, who are a team that is expected to be in the mix in the loaded SEC. Almost a 10-point underdog already, this is a difficult matchup against quarterback LaNorris Sellers and a loaded South Carolina offense.
This is where the No. 6 comes in for Virginia Tech. There are a lot more questions than answers facing Pry and his team, and if we're being honest, this season is setting up for another season that the Hokies have suffered through the last two years, a 6-6 record. Would it surprise anyone if that's the way it ended up?
Now the jury is out on what Pry needs to go this season to return for a fifth season in Blacksburg, six or seven wins, but what happens if it's five or fewer? I can see a path to another 6-6 campaign for the Hokies, and that should be enough to save Pry's job, but again, we're just six Sundays away from the season kicking off.
