James Franklin hit the ground running when he was hired in November at Virginia Tech by flipping several of his Class of 2026 commitments from Penn State to the Hokies. After adding some key players through the Transfer Portal in January, the veteran head coach turned his eyes toward recruiting in the Class of 2027.
Franklin and his staff just finished up a recruiting period that saw some priority recruits make their way to Blacksburg and across the country to other schools during a key recruiting period. So far in the Class of 2027, the Hokies have a class that is currently ranked No. 10 according to 247Sports, with 25 commitments currently.

It has been a while since Virginia Tech picked up a commitment in the class, and Thursday night, they had a priority recruit making his decision. Four-star cornerback Kelvin Millington, from Bogart, Georgia, and North Oconee High School, was down to three schools: Virginia Tech, South Carolina, and Texas Tech. In the end, he ended up picking the Gamecocks, which wasn't a surprise after the Crystal Balls were leaning that way.
Shane Beamer and South Carolina deal James Franklin and Virginia Tech another recruiting setback
Again, it wasn't surprising that the commitment went to South Carolina. The 6-foot-3.5, 188-pound Millington. visited his final three schools, with Virginia Tech being the final visit this past weekend. He visited South Carolina on June 5 and Texas Tech on June 12.
The commitments have not been going the way of Franklin and the Hokies lately, and there is still some more work to do in the class with more decisions coming in the coming weeks. However, at cornerback, Virginia Tech has commitments from Chase Johnson of Twin City, Georgia, and Austin Barrett from Paramus, New Jersey. Brent Pry's defense also has a commitment from safeties Elijah Butler of Baltimore, Maryland.
It's back to the drawing board, but Beamer is the latest to hand Franklin a recruiting loss after Mike Norvell did it twice with Florida State and Josh Heupel did it once at Tennessee.
