There was an NFL doubleheader on Monday night, and each of the four teams featured a former Virginia Tech player. When the dust settled, the Atlanta Falcons handed the Buffalo Bills their second straight loss behind a pair of former Hokies. The Chicago Bears walked off against the Washington Commanders on the game's final play, also thanks to a former Hokie.
In the Falcons' win over the Bills, it was the right foot of former Virginia Tech kicker John Parker Romo who had a hand in the win. Signed a month ago when Atlanta moved on from Younghoe Koo, Romo had a solid beginning with his new team, but was injured and had to win another kicking battle to keep his job.
He drilled all three extra points, but missed on one of his two field goal attempts. He had his first one blocked, but when he needed to seal the win and put Buffalo away, he did, nailing a 33-yard field goal with 1:43 left in the 24-14 victory. Linebacker Divine Deablo finished with five tackles for the Falcons' defense.
Atlanta improved to 3-2 and now heads to San Francisco to play the 49ers on Sunday night. Buffalo is now tied with the New England Patriots for first place in the AFC East at 4-2, but the Patriots own the tiebreaker after last weekend's head-to-head win.
As for the Bears, they picked up their third straight win, 25-24, over the Commanders on the road in the rain. Trailing 24-16 in the fourth quarter, Chicago cut it to 24-22 after a touchdown, before a Washington fumble in Bears territory led to a Jake Moody 38-yard field goal as time expired for the one-point win.
Defensively, Tremaine Edmunds finished with a team-high 13 tackles for the Bears, who host the 1-5 New Orleans Saints on Sunday.
