Sunday marked the first of 18 NFL Sundays in the 2026 season, and it also marked the beginning of another NFL season for some former Virginia Tech players. One of those players who began another season, but with a different team, was linebacker Tremaine Edmunds.
After leaving the Chicago Bears in free agency, Edmunds inked a three-year deal with the New York Giants for $36 million to be the new coach under John Harbaugh. The Giants waited all day to begin their season with a game at home under the lights on Sunday Night Football against the Dallas Cowboys. For one night, the Giants were America's Team. Edmunds made sure that it was a successful opening night for not only his new teammates but also his first-year head coach.
New York defeated the Cowboys, 28-20, and Edmunds led the defense. The former Hokie registered a team-high eight tackles, seven solo. After the game, Edmunds was given one of the game balls in the Giants' locker room, but if he plays like that all season long and can stay healthy, he might end up being one of the better offseason signings. He'll be on national TV in Week 2 when New York visits the Los Angeles Rams next Monday night.

- Former Virginia Tech running back Bhayshul Tuten had 15 carries for 66 yards for the Jacksonville Jaguars in a season-opening 34-10 rout of the Cleveland Browns. He more than doubled any other Jacksonville running back in total yards while quarterback Trevor Lawrence threw for 245 yards and four touchdowns.
- Chuck Clark had an interception and three tackles for the Detroit Lions in a 31-30 overtime win over the New Orleans Saints at home. The former Hokies defensive back is in his first season with Detroit.
- The Washington Commanders comeback late against the Philadelphia eagles came up short, but former Hokies wide receiver Jaylin Lane had a good game returning kicks. He returned three kicks for 95 yards, while returning three punts for 53 yards in a 24-22 loss. Washington remains on the road next weekend for another divisional game against the Cowboys.
- Chamarri Conner and the Kansas City Chiefs open the season on Monday Night Football at home against the Denver Broncos.
