Looking to bounce back from a frustrating overtime loss to North Carolina in overtime on Thursday night, the Virginia Tech women's basketball team survived a scare from Georgia Tech on Sunday afternoon at Cassell Coliseum.

Honoring their two seniors, Texas Tech transfer Kilah Freelon and Northwestern transfer Mel Daley, the Hokies used a strong second half to fend off the pesky Yellow Jackets to pick up an 11-point win to improve to 21-8 overall and 11-6 in the ACC. Virginia Tech has one game remaining, next Sunday at Virginia, before the ACC Tournament begins.

Second half Virgnia Tech dominance

Trailing by a point at halftime, the Hokies came out in the second half and held Georgia Tech to eight third-quarter points and 11 in the fourth. For the game, Virginia Tech forced 24 turnovers and held the Yellow Jackets to 29% shooting from the field.

Virginia Tech finished the game with 12 steals, four from Mackenzie Nelson, while Georgia Tech had nine. It was a sloppy game at times by both teams, who are jockeying for seeding in the ACC Tournament next month.

Seniors finish strong inside Cassell

Carleigh Wenzel scored her 1,000th career point in the game, but it was about Freelon and Daley. The two transfers have come in and fit in perfectly into the program. They have been big contributors all season long, and that was the case against the Yellow Jackets.

Daley had six points in 19 minutes, but she made up for going 2-for-9 from the field with two steals. She is usually money on the mid-range jumpers, but like almost everybody in the game, she struggled, but contributed with her defense. Freelon had four points and seven rebounds and was very active on the defensive end with three blocked shots, one behind Carys Baker, who had a team-high four.

What's up next for Virginia Tech?

After a busy February, Virginia Tech has a bye this week before closing out the regular season in Charlottesville next Sunday. The Cavaliers are on the NCAA Tournament bubble, but they may have all but locked up a bid in the 68-team field with a stunning 74-72 upset of Louisville on the road. UVA will host North Carolina on Thursday night before the Hokies come to town on Sunday. There is a lot on the line in all of those games for seeding purposes in the ACC Tournament.
