After getting blown out at home on Jan. 2 by Florida State, the Virginia Tech women's basketball team bounced back with a pair of road wins at Miami and Georgia Tech. Both games needed fourth-quarter rallies by the Hokies.
The win over Georgia Tech was a big one. The Yellow Jackets entered the game ranked 13th in the country and the lone remaining undefeated team in the ACC. Not only did the Hokies rally and take a late lead, they were forced to overtime. At the end of the first extra session, Georgia Tech nailed a 3-pointer as the time expired to force a second overtime. That's when Virginia Tech took over.
The Hokies outscored the hosts 14-3 in overtime and held the Yellow Jackets without a field goal. One of the reasons for the win was the play at both ends of the floor by center Rose Micheaux and on Monday, she was rewarded for her performances against not only Georgia Tech but also Wake Forest.
Rose Micheaux named ACC Player of the Week
Against Georgia Tech in a 105-94 victory, Micheaux played 45 minutes, scored 20 points and grabbed 12 rebounds. She shot 10-of-18 from the field and had two blocks. In Sunday's 61-54 rock-fight win over Wake Forest, she had 20 points and nine rebounds, but was a perfect 9-for-9 from the field in 36 minutes., which earned her ACC Player of the Week honors.
If there is one player who has taken off this season under first-year coach Megan Duffy, it's Micheaux. Her offensive game has come full circle with her ability to finish at the basket, but she has also shot the ball very well from the mid-range and the elbow. Her play at both ends of the floor has been big for Duffy and the Hokies who are looking to extend their three-game winning streak Thursday night when Virginia comes to Blacksburg.
