After picking up a huge come-from-behind win over Miami on Sunday afternoon on the road with a big fourth quarter, the next task for the Virginia Tech women's basketball was a difficult one. Having to return on the road to play the lone remaining undefeated team in the ACC at Georgia Tech. They are undefeated no more.
Down but not out in the fourth quarter for the second game in a row, the Hokies mounted another furious rally in the final 10 minutes to force overtime before the Yellow Jackets forced a double overtime and that's when the Hokies took control to pick up a massive ACC road win to knock off the No. 13 team in the country. They did not allow a Georgia Tech field goal in the second overtime. It was a true team win for Megan Duffy's team, who improved to 11-4 overall and 2-2 in the ACC. Georgia Tech is now 15-1 and 3-1.
All five starters were in double-figures and did all the damage for the Hokies on the scoreboard. Carleigh Wenzel led them with 24 points, including five 3's, 10 rebounds, and three steals. Utah transfer Lani White had 20 points and five rebounds and Rose Micheaux had 20 points and 12 rebounds with a pair of blocks. Matilda Ekh had 17 points before fouling out and Carys Baker had 17 points and three 3-pointers.
Gut reactions from Virginia Tech's win to Georgia Tech
- What an odd start to the game with a technical foul for the administration error. Two free points for the Yellow Jackets. Thank goodness it didn't cost them.
- Mackenzie Nelson has impressed more and more. Losing Samyha Suffren is a big loss for the season, but Nelson has done very well in her minutes.
- Georgia Tech is a tough team to guard with their speed and ability to beat their defender off the dribble. That hurt the Hokies late in the game.
- What incredible growth from Wenzel and Baker from last season to this season. It's great to see.
- Not to be overlooked is Micheaux who has been calmly knocking down elbow jumper which makes Virginia Tech tougher to defend.
- Rebounding, rebounding, rebounding. It's easy to say but a foul the rebounder before at the end of the first overtime up three before she passed it out to Rusne Augustinaite who drilled the 3-pointer to tie the game at the buzzer. What a shot though. Cold-blooded shot.
- This Virginia Tech team, win or lose, is fun to watch. You can't say otherwise. The heart, hustle, and overall play are just fun and great basketball. Duffy is perfect for this program.
- What a defensive clinic in the second overtime. Georgia Tech did look gassed, but still, to hold an undefeated team at home with no field goals is a statement.
After playing three of their first four ACC games on the road, the Hokies head home to host Wake Forest on Sunday afternoon looking for a third straight win.
