Before the season began, it was thought that when the Virginia Tech football team hosted Rutgers on Sept. 21 at Lane Stadium they would be 3-0 and looking for a big statement win before ACC play begins. However, a stunning Week 1 loss at Vanderbilt has the Hokies at 2-1 coming into the game after wins over Marshall and Old Dominion.

Rutgers, on the other hand, is 2-0 after wins over Howard and Akron in the first two weeks and a bye this past weekend. That gives them a chance to get a head start to start planning for Virginia Tech while the Hokies were beating Old Dominion, 37-17 in Norfolk. This is still the most highly-anticipated non-conference game for Brent Pry and his team before ACC play begins next Friday night at Miami on a short week. With that said, let's dive into the matchup with the Scarlet Knights.

Virginia Tech vs. Rutgers Odds

At the time this article is being written and according to DraftKings, Virginia Tech is a 3.5 favorite over Rutgers, but the line has seen some movement down since Sunday when the Hokies opened as a 5.5 favorite, which was a bit of a surprise.

Virginia Tech vs. Rutgers History

This will be the 17th overall meeting between Virginia Tech and Rutgers with the Hokies holding a 12-4 advantage. The Scarlet Knights beat the Hokies, 35-16, last season at home and this will be their first visit to Blacksburg since 2002. Virginia Tech doesn't need much of a reminder of last season's matchup when running back Kyle Monangai rushed for 143 yards and three touchdowns. He'll be a big focus this week of Chris Marve's defense as they attempt to slow him down this time around.
