Virginia Tech football report card after convincing win over Old Dominion
By Scott Roche
For the second straight week, the Virginia Tech football team was able to overpower a Sun Belt Conference team. Seven days after beating Marshall, 31-14, at Lane Stadium the Hokies went on the road and beat Old Dominion, 37-17, to get to 2-1 on the season.
With three non-conference games down and one more to go this upcoming weekend at home against Rutgers, here is a look back at the Hokies' win over the Monarchs with the latest Virginia Tech Football report card.
Virginia Tech Report Card vs. Old Dominion
Another game on the road, another strong showing from Hokie Nation. This game was easier to get to in Norfolk and Virginia Tech fans helped Old Dominion sell out their stadium. As usual, Brent Pry thanked Hokies' fans in his postgame presser.
Chris Marve had his unit ready and aside from two second-quarter drives, they dominated the Monarchs. The reason why this grade is this low, and really could be lower, is because of Tyler Bowen who once again had his moments calling the offense, but late in the first quarter and the whole second quarter, the play calling left a lot to be desired. It feels like last season's early struggles with the offense because of play-calling continue to creep back each week. Kyron Drones just doesn't seem like he can get into a rhythm.
John Love missed a field goal, which was a surprise in the second quarter, but he made his next three kicks and hit all of his extra points for the Hokies. Jaylin Lane had a key punt return in the third quarter that led to points. Again, aside from Love's miss, it was another good weekend for the special teams unit.
