Virginia Tech surprisingly in national writers preseason 12-team College Football Playoff field
By Scott Roche
Game week for the first weekend of college football season in 2024, albeit Week 0 with just a handful of games, is here. This season there are a lot of new looks around college football with conference realignment taking over and the expansion of the College Football Playoff from four teams to 12. That's right, the expanded CFP is finally here.
The expanded field gives more teams hope, especially if they drop a game early in the season, and creates a lot more late-season buzz. It's going to be fun to watch how things unfold on a week-to-week basis this season when it comes to the CFP and projections. One national college football writer released his 12-team field and it included Virginia Tech.

Brett McMurphy released his bowl projections for the 2024 season and it included the teams he thinks will make the College Football Playoff field. The veteran scribe had the Hokies in his first 12-team field. Here are the teams he thinks will make the field before the season starts.
1. Oregon
2. Alabama
3. Miami
4. Utah
5. Ohio State
6. Georgia
7. Ole Miss
8. LSU
9. Penn State
10. Virginia Tech
11. Iowa
12. Texas State
This is certainly an interesting 12-team field projection. A lot of people have the Hokies as a dark horse in the ACC this season and also a dark horse for the CFP, but McMurphy thinks they will get in through these first projections. He has them taking a trip to Ole Miss, which certainly would be an interesting match-up against former tight end Dae'Quan Wright who transferred there this offseason.
Virginia Tech certainly has high hopes and a lot of hype entering the season and a march toward a CFP berth is not out of the question should they take care of business this season. A lot of people need to see how things unfold as the season goes along, but McMurphy is on board before the season even begins at Vanderbilt on Aug. 31. Here's hoping he's correct!
