The Virginia Tech softball team began the 2024 season last weekend at the Tiger Invitational in Auburn, Alabama going 4-0-1 with wins over Auburn, Belmont, and two over Illinois. They tied the final game of the weekend against Auburn in a somewhat controversial fashion. Tied 5-5 in the top of the seventh, the Hokies took a 9-5 lead, only to have Auburn's coach complain about the rain, and the game was called and reverted to the sixth inning with the score tied 5-5.

This weekend, Virginia Tech, which is ranked 17th in the latest ESPN.com/USA Softball Collegiate Top 25 Poll, is at Arizona State for the Littlewood Classic and they kicked off the weekend with wins over BYU and Arizona State.

Against the Cougars in the opener Friday afternoon, sophomore Lyndsey Grein continued her strong start to the season with 10 strikeouts in 6.2 innings while scattering three hits and allowing one run. Michelle Chatfield had an RBI single for Virginia Tech and their other run was scored on a passed ball.

Against the host Sun Devils, the Hokies completed a sweep of the day with a 9-0 win over ASU. Emma Lemley worked five innings, striking out six, walking two and giving up just two hits.

Offensively, Virginia Tech was led by Addy Greene who went 3-for-3 with two doubles, a home run, and three RBIs. Cameron Fagan had two hits, a pair of doubles and two RBIs. Bre Peck drove in two runs, Chatfield had a home run and Emma Mazzarone drove in a run for the 6-0-1 Hokies.

Virginia Tech will play two more games Saturday in Arizona against California and Grand Canyon.
