Softball sweeps Notre Dame

The 20th-ranked softball team opened ACC play at home over the weekend by sweeping Notre Dame to improve to 15-3-1 on the season. Cori McMillan had 4 RBIs in a 9-1 win in the series opener, then Bre Peck had a home run and three RBI in the second game, a 9-3 win.

Sunday in the series final, Maija Louko had a grand slam and Michelle Chatfield had a home run in an 11-5 victory for the Hokies, who play at Eastern Kentucky Wednesday before a three-game series at Louisville next weekend.

Women's Lacrosse looses at No. 1 BC

The women's lacrosse team had the tough task of going on the road at top-ranked Boston College Sunday and losing, 20-7, to the Eagles. Virginia Tech hung close trailing 3-2 early on, but BC went on a scoring run to take command.

Paige Tyson had two goals for the Hokies, who fell to 4-2 overall and 1-1 in the ACC. They will host Elon Wednesday at 1 o'clock.

Baseball wins 2 out of 3

Looking for a seventh win and a sweep of Stony Brook over the weekend, the Hokies baseball dropped the third and final game of the series Sunday, 4-3. Virginia Tech won the series opener Friday, 6-3, then Game 2 Saturday, 11-5. The Hokies, who fell to 8-3, will look to get back on the winning track Wednesday when they host Binghamton.

Caitlin Clark breaks record

Sunday, Iowa's Caitlin Clark broke Pete Maravich's Division 1 men's and women's scoring record (3,667 points) as the Hawkeyes beat second-ranked Ohio State, 93-83. Clark reached the milestone late in the second quarter on a free throw. Last week, she announced that she was entering the WNBA Draft following the NCAA Tournament. It will be interesting to see if the Hokies get in the same NCAA Tournament bracket as Clark and get to play her one more time.
