Saying that the 2024 offseason so far has been busy for Virginia Tech men’s basketball coach Mike Young and his staff would be a major understatement. By now, you know that the Hokies roster has gone through a major shake-up after a mass exodus following their second-round elimination at the hands of Ohio State in the NIT in March.

Gone are Sean Pedulla, Tyler Nickel, Lynn Kidd, and MJ Collins, all of who entered the transfer portal. That left major holes on the roster for the 2024-25 season, but Young has built the roster back up through the transfer portal. Like we did with football, here are three things we learned in May about the Virginia Tech men’s basketball team.

Virginia Tech secures in-state commit

Fairfax native Ben Hammond previously committed to the University of Rhode Island, but he de-committed and reopened his recruiting. The 5-foor-10 point guard flipped his commitment to Virginia Tech, giving the Hokies a good young player who can handle the ball.

He will step right in and be a player who can come in and make a difference off the bench for Young. URI coach Archie Miller said that his program was getting a “championship-caliber player who is dynamic on both ends of the floor.’’ This could be a very good pickup in recruiting for Virginia Tech.
