Virginia Tech QB Kyron Drones gets more preseason recognition with latest watch list
By Scott Roche
It has been a busy pre-season for Virginia Tech football players and award watchlists for the 2024 season. Last season Baylor transfer quarterback Kyron Drones was inserted as the full-time starter in Week 3 at Rutgers after Grant Wells went down with an injury the previous week against Purdue at home.
Once Drones got comfortable, the Hokies offense took off and he established himself a dual-threat signal caller. He had a strong arm and combined that with his ability to break multiple tackles when running the ball, he gives Virginia Tech a threat in the backfield with Bhayshul Tuten who can be a very difficult duo to slow down.
Wednesday, Drones was named to another preseason watch list when he was on the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award watch list, and he is one of 13 ACC quarterbacks. The award is given out annually to the top senior or upperclassman quarterback set to graduate with their class. Drones was previously named to the Davey O'Brien Award watch list and the Maxwell Award watch list with Tuten.
Last season for Virginia Tech, Drones threw for 2,084 yards and had a good touchdown to interception rate of 17-3. The Texas native is set up to have a big season to increase his draft stock.
Virginia Tech to face six Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award watch list QBs in 2024
The Hokies and defensive coordinator Chris Marve are going to face signal callers on the list this fall. Thomas Castellanos of Boston College, Ashton Daniels of Stanford, Athan Kaliakmanis of Rutgers, Haynes King of Georgia Tech, Cade Klubnik of Clemson, and Cam Ward of Miami.
It is an impressive list of quarterbacks and the winner will be announced on Dec. 6 in Maryland, the night before the conference championship games to be held that weekend.
