Virginia Tech is exactly the team we thought they were...... in the 2nd half of games

If only the Hokies could do in the first half of games what they do in the second half of their first two contest of 2024.

Going into the 2024 season, the Virginia Tech football team was getting a lot of preseason hype from a lot of analysts. Head coach Brent Pry warned his team time after time to not listen or read the hype. It only took one game for the hype train and bubble to pop after a season-opening loss at Vanderbilt.

After rebounding with a win over Marshall, 31-14, last Saturday, the Hokies are 1-1 going to Old Dominion this weekend. If there is one big takeaway from the first two weeks, it’s that the Hokies are living up to their preseason, in the second half of games only.

Virginia Tech has played two dominant second half’s

One theme in the first two weeks of the season is the rough starts the Hokies have had. The offense has put up a grand total of six points, and two field goals, one in each game. The only touchdown scored was on a Jaylin Lane punt return against Marshall. Other than that, it’s been a rough go of it offensively. Defensively, Tech allowed 17 points to Vanderbilt, but just seven to the Thundering Hurd and that was because of a blocked punt that set Marshall up deep in Hokies’ territory.

The second half, however, has been what we expected from them from the opening kickoff. Virginia Tech’s offense has looked impressive with running the ball and throwing the ball deep down the field, while their defense has been just as good and almost allowed them to complete a comeback in Nashville in Week 1.

Going forward, Tech needs to play the opening 30 minutes as they have the last 30 minutes in the first two weeks. Their offense is clicking, both running and throwing the ball downfield and their defense has been stout and forced multiple turnovers on-downs against Marshall. They need that from the opening kickoff and for the full 60 minutes to be the Virginia Tech we thought we would see in 2024.
