It was a busy weekend of results on the field for Virginia Tech athletic teams, which was highlighted by the Hokies football team rolling to a 37-17 victory at Old Dominion. It's time to recap a busy weekend of action in Blacksburg.
Women's soccer shuts out Syracuse
Friday night on the road, the Hokies men's soccer team shutout Syracuse, 2-0. Sunday afternoon at Thompson Field, the women shutout the Orange with a 1-0 victory. Allie George scored the game-winner in the 42nd minute right before halftime.
Virginia Tech improved to 7-2-1 overall and 2-0 in the ACC for the first time since 2009 after beating Clemson on the road in their opener. Lauren Hargrove made seven saves for the shutout. The Hokies will have a week off before playing at Boston College next Sunday afternoon on the ACC Network.
Volleyball beats UNC-Greensboro
After splitting their two matches on Friday on the first day of the Hokie Invitational, the volleyball team closed out action over the weekend with a 3-0 win over UNC-Greensboro, winning games by scores of 26-24, 25-18 and 25-13 to improve to 4-4 overall on the young season.
Leandra Mangual Duran had 15 digs for the Hokies and Belle Patrick had 15 kills. Viktoria Wahlgren had 36 assists and 10 digs in the three sets. Patrick and Hailey Pearce each made the All-Tournament Team for Virginia Tech. They return to the Cassell Coliseum court next weekend when they host Chattanooga and Rider in the Virginia Tech Invitational.
Inside the numbers of men's soccer beating Syracuse
The 17th-ranked men's soccer team opened ACC play with an impressive road win at Syracuse. It was the first two-goal conference win for Virginia Tech since Oct. 8, 2021, when they beat then No. 23 Louisville, 4-2. The 13 corners for the Hokies in the game tie that same number they achieved in a non-conference game against Mercer on Sept. 5, 2022. They return to action Friday night at SMU.
