It’s been a busy start to a busy weekend for Virginia Tech athletic teams and let’s break it down with the latest Virginia Tech Hokies News.

Nationally ranked men's soccer top Syracuse on the road

The Hokies' men's soccer team, ranked 17th in the country, opened ACC play in impressive fashion with a road win at Syracuse, 2-0, on a pair of second-half goals. Freshman Alex Perez opened the scoring in the 60th minute off a set piece just outside the Orange penalty area.

Two minutes later, Malick Thiaw from France doubled the lead when he roofed a shot from inside the box. The 5-0-1 Hokies will have a week off before traveling to Dallas, Texas to face first-year ACC foe SMU next Friday night at 8 p.m.

Women's basketball recruit makes decision

Class of 2025 women's basketball recruit, four-star guard Lena Girardi, daughter of former MLB World Series champion and manager Joe, recently narrowed her list down to five schools and included Virginia Tech. Friday, she announced her commitment and she committed to Oklahoma State over the Hokies North Carolina, Northwestern, and Arizona.

Women’s soccer edges Clemson on the road

It could not have been a better start to ACC play for the Hokies women’s soccer team. They picked up their first win over Clemson in a decade and won their ACC season opener for the first time since 2021 with a 2-1 victory on the road.

Anna Weir scored the first goal in the 64th minute off an assist from Natalie Mitchell, then seven minutes later, Taylor Lewin doubled the lead off a pass from Taylor Price. Lauren Hargrove made several big saves late to secure the win. Virginia Tech, which is 6-2-1 overall, will host Syracuse on Sunday at noon on Thompson Field.

Volleyball spilts the first day of the Hokie Invitational

Friday, the Hokies volleyball team split their first two games of the Hokie Invitational. Virginia Tech beat Norfolk State, 3-1, in the afternoon before losing in straight sets to Cleveland State to fall to 3-4 overall.

The Hokies will return to the court Saturday afternoon for a match against UNC-Greensboro at 3:30 p.m.
