In this edition of Virginia Tech Hokies News, the softball team adds a pitcher through the transfer portal, a baseball player has a good start to his summer league season, and the men's basketball team reportedly adds another opponent to their 2024-25 schedule.

Softball adds a pitcher in the transfer portal

Like every other sport, softball had some players enter the transfer portal following their elimination in the Los Angeles Regional of the NCAA Tournament with the biggest name being pitcher Lyndsey Grein. She didn't last long in the portal and recently committed to Oregon.

Tuesday, Hokies coach Pete D'Amour replaced Grein when Sophie Kleiman committed to Virginia Tech after a strong 2024 season at Indiana. She went 14-5 with a 2.69 ERA and held opponents to a .245 batting average in 130 innings.

Virginia Tech men's basketball reportedly adds non-conference opponent

According to Jon Rothstein of CBS Sports, the Hokies men's basketball team will host Navy in a non-conference game in 2024-25. Virginia Tech already has games against Penn State in Baltimore and Vanderbilt at home as part of the ACC/SEC Challenge already booked, as well as Jacksonville on Nov. 20 as part of the Fort Myers Tip-Off.

Henry Cooke begins summer with home run

Virginia Tech baseball catcher Henry Cooke gets to spend the summer on Cape Cod playing in the prestigious Cape Cod League in Massachusetts. He is playing for the Falmouth Commodores and he began his summer with a bang.

Cooke blasted a mammoth home run to left center field against the Wareham Gatemen. This past season for the Hokies, Cooke batted .296 with nine doubles, nine home runs and 37 RBIs. Playing the Cape Cod League will be good for Cooke as it has produced several major league players and always draws the top college talent from around the country.
