It’s going to be a busy early weekend for Virginia Tech athletics. The Hokies have three big games on tap for Friday night, highlighted by the football team beginning ACC play at No. 7 Miami. That is not the only Top 10 team a Hokies sports team will be playing this weekend and that’s where we begin this edition of Virginia Tech Hokies News.

Men’s soccer to host No. 1 Pittsburgh

Friday night at Thompson Field, the 17th-ranked Hokies men’s soccer team will host No. 1 Pittsburgh in their first home ACC match of the season. Virginia Tech split their first conference matches, winning at Syracuse and losing last week at SMU.

Virginia Tech enters the game 5-1-1 overall and will look to pick up a signature win to help their case to get into the NCAA Tournament later this season.

Volleyball opens ACC play on the road

The Hokies volleyball team will open ACC play at North Carolina State Friday night, riding a three-game winning streak. At 6-4 overall, Virginia Tech has beaten UNC-Greensboro, Chattanooga, and Ride in their last three matches. The Wolfpack, however, will be a step up in competition for the Hokies.

Women's soccer beats Louisville

After losing at Boston College on Sunday afternoon, 3-1, the Hokies' women's soccer team looked to bounce-back in conference play at home against Louisville.

Taylor Price scored a pair of first-half goals for Virginia Tech and finished with a hat trick in a 5-1 Tech victory. She opened the scoring in the 32nd minute off a rebound of a shot off a corner. Five minutes later in the 37th minute, she tallied her second off a through-ball where she beat the goalie to the ball inside the Cardinals' penalty area to tuck home. She completed the hat trick in the 64th minute.

In the second half, the Cardinals cut the deficit in half at 2-1, but goals from Anna Weir and Natalie Mitchell three minutes apart gave the Hokies control of the match to improve to 8-3-1 overall and 2-1 in the ACC. They return to the pitch on Oct. 3 at Miami.
