By Scott Roche
In this edition of Virginia Tech Hokies News, two softball players earn All-American honors, and could Utah be joining the ACC soon?
Cori McMillan and Michelle Chatfield received All-American honors
The 2024 Virginia Tech softball season came to an end with back-to-back losses in the Los Angeles Regional two weeks ago against UCLA and Grand Canyon after they opened the tournament with a win over San Diego State. This season was one where the Hokies hit 115 home runs on what seemed like a nightly display of offensive firepower.
They had two players (Emma Ritter and Addy Greene) finish the season batting over .400 and three players (Cori McMillan, Cameron Fagan, and Bre Peck all finish over .300. Tuesday, two players were honored for the 2024 season by Softball America.
Virginia Tech’s two leading home runs hitters, McMillan and freshman Michelle Chatfield earned All-American honors from Softball America. McMillan was named to the Second Team after hitting .379, slugging .869, and led the Hokies in home runs with 21 and RBI with 64. She had a three-run home run against UCLA in the top of the first inning of what turned into a 7-6 Bruins win.
Chatfield earned All-American Freshman Team honors after hitting 19 home runs, driving in 37 runs while batting .275 and slugging .693.
Could Utah join the ACC?
The PAC-12 as we know it is done and two schools will be joining the ACC starting this fall. Stanford and California are making the jump along with SMU, but could another school from the PAC-12 join them?
Dick Weiss of the New York Daily News recently put on his X account that there is a discussion on Utah joining the ACC despite them joining the Big XII this fall. There is still a lot that would need to be done, but a big reason could be the expansion of the College Football Playoff from four to 12 teams beginning in 2024 and the path being easier in the ACC for the Utes. Stay tuned.
