Virginia Tech Hokies News: Soccer sweeps & women's basketball time set vs. Iowa

In this edition of Virginia Tech Hokies News, the time for a key women's basketball non-conference game was set, and the men's and women's soccer teams picked up a pair of wins on the pitch Thursday night.

Women's basketball time set vs. Iowa

For the second straight season, the Virginia Tech and Iowa women's basketball teams will battle early in the season. For the second straight season, the two teams will take part in the Ally Tipoff at the Spectrum Center in Charlotte.

On Nov. 10, the Hokies and Hawkeyes will play at 5:30 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on ESPN2. This season's edition will be a lot differnet from last season as both teams have new coaches and nearly all of the key players are no longer on the two teams' rosters. It will still be a good early-season test for first-year Hokies' coach Megan Duffy and her team.

Men's soccer opens season with win over North Florida

There is a different vibe surrounding the Hokies men's soccer team this preseason and they opened the 2024 season on a good note in a non-conference match at home against North Florida with a 4-0 win and earned its first season-opening win since 2019.

Charlotte transfer Samy Kolby wasted little time making an impact for the Hokies with a pair of first-half goals in the 34th and 41st minutes. Both strikes were impressive and cleanly beat the Ospreys' keeper with perfectly placed shots. In the second half, CJ Cappola and Noe Uwimana added goals in the 48th and 54th minutes respectively. Tech returns to the pitch next Tuesday at home against UNC Ashville at 6 o'clock.

Women's soccer beats Delaware

After two wins to open the season and being ranked No. 21 this week, the Hokies women's soccer team picked up their third shutout to begin the season with a 1-0 win over Delaware. A first-half goal from Taylor Price in the 20th minute was the difference.

Virginia Tech has one more road game remaining on their current three-game trip on Sunday at Monmouth.
