In this edition of Virginia Tech Hokies News, the baseball team's final home game of the 2024 season was canceled, Jaden Schutt officially becomes a Hokie, a women's basketball coach retires and the softball team is getting ready for the NCAA Tournament.
Baseball game vs. James Madison ruled a no contest
The Virginia Tech baseball team was scheduled to host James Madison in the regular season final non-conference and home game for the 2024 season, but after two innings, the game was canceled and ruled a no-contest because of rain.
The Hokies will travel to Charlottesville starting Thursday night to open their final three-game series of the season before the ACC Tournament begins next week.
Jaden Schutt officially becomes a Hokie
Saturday night, Virginia Tech menโs basketball coach Mike Young got a commitment from Duke transfer Jaden Schutt. The Hokies made it official Tuesday.
Schutt, a four-star recruit in the Class of 2022 and the Gatorade Player of the Year in Illinois, missed last season for the Blue Devils with an injury, but he is a good shooter who should fit into the rotation smoothly for Virginia Tech.
Iowa coach Lisa Bluder retires
When Virginia Tech and Iowa womenโs basketball teams play for the second season inย a row in November in the Ally Tip-Off Tournament in North Carolina, both teams will have new head coaches on the sideline.
As you know by now, Virginia Tech lost Kenny Brooks to Kentucky after the Hokies were eliminated in the second round of the NCAA Tournament in March by Baylor. Virginia Tech AD Whit Babcock hired Marquette coach Megan Duffy to replace Brooks and Iowa coach Lisa Bluder announced her retirement a month after the Hawkeyes lost in the NCAA Championship Game against South Carolina. Iowa named assistant Jan Jensen as their new coach.
Softball begins the NCAA Tournament in two days
It certainly feels like the Hokies softball team got a tough draw and were under-seeded by the NCAA Tournament committee, but the Hokies will open up play Friday night at 6 p.m. against San Diego State at UCLA. The sixth overall seeded Bruins will play Grand Canyon in the second game with the winners and losers playing on Saturday in the double-elimination format.
