Virginia Tech Hokies News: Christian Darrisaw extension, transfer portal addition
By Scott Roche
In this edition of Virginia Tech Hokies News, a former football lineman gets an extension with his NFL team, the baseball team gets a commitment from a transfer pitcher, and the men's basketball team adds to their staff for the 2024-25 season.
Christian Darrisaw gets extension with the Minnesota Vikings
Former Virginia Tech offensive lineman Christian Darrisaw got an extension with the Minnesota Vikings for four years and $113 million. He had two years remaining on his rookie contract, but the Vikings locked him up at 25 years old.
Minnesota picked Darrisaw 23rd overall in the first round of the 2021 Draft after his stint in Blacksburg. It's a nice contract for a player who only got one FBS offer from Virginia Tech. He has played in 34 games for the Vikings in three seasons and started 32 of them.
Baseball team adds transfer pitcher
Baseball coach John Szefc added some pitching depth from the transfer portal when McNeese State righthander Cameron LeJeune committed to the Hokies. This past season, he went 7-2 with a 4.14 ERA in 74 innings with 57 strikeouts and 26 walks. If there is one area that Virginia Tech needed help in the transfer portal from as we learned as last season went along, it's arms, whether it's in the bullpen or the starting rotation.
Men's basketball reportedly adds recruiting coordinator
The men's basketball reportedly has added a new recruiting coordinator for the upcoming season in Blake Wetherington who comes to Blacksburg from Arkansas, Chris Arvin from 247Sports reported.
He will replace Matt Olinger who left this season and Wetherington will be in charge of overseeing recruiting visits, recruiting projects, and all graphics that are used related to recruiting. He is considered a full-time addition to Mike Young's staff and has recruited some future NBA players at his previous stops including Iowa State and Murray State.
