Saturday, the Virginia Tech football team will play their annual Spring Game at 3 p.m. at Lane Stadium. There is a lot to look forward to in the game between some incoming freshmen, and some good transfers, and one of the biggest questions, is how will the backup quarterback situation play out behind Kyron Drones?

By all indications, the spring practices have been going well and the Hokies are looking forward to Saturday. After that game, there will be a very important day on the calendar and that is the spring transfer portal.

Monday, April 15, the spring transfer portal opens and will be open for 15 days, closing on April 30. Now, it’s important to note that during this time, players must enter the portal during the open time frame, but they don’t need to commit during that time frame. You have to think that there will be some news surrounding Brent Pry’s team, but just how much, if any, remains to be seen.

Over the winter, Pry and his staff added several players from the portal, most notably offensive lineman Montavious Cunningham from Georgia State, defensive lineman Aeneas Peebles from Duke, Kelvin Gilliam from Oklahoma, and Kemari Copeland from Iowa Western Community College. Linebacker Sam Brumfield from Middle Tennessee State also committed to the Hokies.

Whether or not Virginia Tech brings anyone in during the spring portal remains to be seen, however, if there is one thing we have learned under Pry is that he has had success in the portal building his current roster and has a keen eye for talent. Drones, running back Bhayshul Tuten, wide receivers Ali Jennings and Jaylin Lane along with Da’Quan Felton are just some of the players that he brought in and are expected to be a big part of the 2024 team.
