Virginia Tech football transfer off to strong start with Big 12 school
By Scott Roche
Last season, Derrick Canteen had a good season for the Virginia Tech football team after transferring from Georgia Southern. The 5-foot-11 cornerback had 43 tackles for the Hokies one year after making a career-high 64 the year before for Georgia Southern.
Shortly after Virginia Tech became bowl-eligible last November with a 55-17 rout of Virginia in Charlottesville, he announced he was entering the transfer portal, but like other players who entered the portal, he stayed with the Hokies through their 41-20 bowl victory over Tulane in the Military Bowl. He only had one tackle in that game, but he was able to be part of a team that had some "unfinished business."
He ended up going from the ACC to the Big 12 after committing to the University of Cincinnati and through three games with the Bearcats, he's on pace to shatter his numbers from his one season in Blacksburg.
Former Virginia Tech DB Derrick Canteen is off to a strong start at Cincinnati
Through three games this season with the Bearcats, Canteen has 14 tackles, eight solo and one interception. In 2023 at Virginia Tech, he had 43 tackles, 23 solo and one pick. He's on pace for 56 tackles in 2024 should he stay healthy.
It should not be surprising that Canteen is off to the start he is as he has proven that he can play at a Power 4 school after three years at Georgia Southern. The Evans, Georgia native, racked up a season-high eight tackles, five solo, in a stunning 28-27 loss to Pittsburgh at home on Sept. 7 after the Panthers rallied in the fourth quarter with 15 unanswered points to secure a road win.
Canteen was good for the Hokies in his one season in Blacksburg and he's off to a good start with Cincinnati so far as they get ready to dive into Big 12 play.
