Virginia Tech football showing interest in former recruit who entered the transfer portal
By Scott Roche
The spring transfer portal is officially open and names are starting to enter it. This transfer portal window is a lot smaller, running until April 30, but players don't need to commit by then, just enter their name.
It's likely sooner or later some members of Virginia Tech enter the portal, but expect third-year head coach Brent Pry to be active. An offensive lineman is a need that he could address and following last Saturday's Spring Game, it certainly sounds like they could be in the market for a backup quarterback to battle with Pop Watson, Dylan Wittke, and Davi Belfort this summer behind Kyron Drones.
Tuesday, a former Virginia Tech running back recruit entered the portal and it was reported that the Hokies have already reached out him.
Virginia Tech reportedly reaches out to Dallan Hayden
Dallan Hayden entered the portal from Ohio State and Dan Morrison of On3 Sports reported that Steve Wiltfong reported to him that Virginia Tech is one of six schools that has reached out to Hayden already in the portal.
The other schools are Colorado, UCLA, Louisville, Auburn and Georgia Tech. During is recruiting process, Virginia Tech offered Hayden in May of 2019.
In two seasons in Columbus with the Buckeyes, Hayden rushed for 553 yards in 10 games as a freshman. In the College Football Playoff Semifinals against Georgia, he had nine carries for 43 yards against the Bulldogs. This past season, he saw his production and carries go down with just 110 yards rushing and a touchdown on just 19 carries.
Ohio State has a stacked running back room which would likely cut into his playing time going forward. Virginia Tech has Bhayshul Tuten coming back with Malachi Thomas, but P.J. Prioleau stood out in the Spring Game as a back who can play in all situations. Still, it doesn't hurt to try and add a talent like Hayden to a roster ready to make a move in 2024.
