Virginia Tech Offensive Report Card vs. Old Dominion
Drones threw a third quarter interception by under throwing his receiver in the end zone, but aside from that, he finished with a team-high 117 yards on the ground and a touchdown on a Tush Push. He was 15-for-26 through the air for 176 yards and a touchdown to Jaylin Lane on their first drive. He had a key 53-yard run in the game while running over two ODU defensive backs down field.
Bhayshul Tuten finished with 115 yards on the ground, two behind Drones, and two more touchdowns including a statement 16-yard run to begin the fourth quarter. Malachi Thomas took some key snaps with Tuten out of the game while backup QB Collin Schlee, a UCLA transfer, and P.J. Prioleau and Jeremiah Coney helped to run out the clock in the fourth quarter.
Lane had a big game, catching seven passes for 106 yards, including a 25-yard touchdown pass on the first drive. He later caught a pass off a bad snap and picked up 46 yards to set the Hokies up deep in ODU territory. Ali Jennings caught three passes before leaving with an injury and Gosnell had a 21-yard catch. Overall, it was a good night for the veteran receivers.
It was a quiet night for the tight ends with Benji Gosnell catching one pass for four yards. They were effective blocking in the run game, but otherwise, it was a quiet night in Norfolk for this group.
This was the best game so far through three weeks for this group. I know that's not saying a lot, but they controlled the line of scrimmage, opened up some holes for the backs, and allowed Drones to go through his reads. A step in the. right direction.
