Virginia Tech Football: PFF grades a Hokies' transfer Top 10 among FBS OT transfers
By Scott Roche
Between the end of the regular season and Virginia Tech's 55-17 win over Virginia that officially made the Hokies bowl-eligible at 6-6 and the bowl game against Tulane University in the Military Bowl, Brent Pry and his staff worked very hard.
Yes, they worked hard in terms of preparing the Hokies for the Green Wave in Annapolis, Maryland, but they also worked just as hard in recruiting and hosting players in the transfer portal. For the second straight year, Tech made some big additions in the transfer portal on both sides of the ball.
Defensively, they added Aeneas Peebles from ACC foe Duke, Kelvin Gilliam from Oklahoma, and Kemari Copeland from Iowa Western Community College along the defensive line. Linebacker Sam Brumfield transferred from Middle Tennessee State, but one addition that was a big one was along the offensive line.
Montavious Cunningham, who played last season at Georgia State, committed to the Hokies to add much-needed depth along the line for quarterback Kyron Drones.
Montavious Cunningham graded high by PFF
Pro Football Focus graded the Top 10 offensive linemen who transferred and Cunningham finished sixth on their list.
Cunningham, who is 6-foot-3 and 305 pounds, picked Virginia Tech over Texas Tech and last season for the Panthers at Georgia State, he played over 700 snaps and allowed just two sacks, something that will be key in protecting Drones. He will also be counted on to help stabilize an offensive line that really came together over the second half of the season and was a reason for the breakout of running back Bhayshul Tuten and Drones' ability to become a dangerous duel-threat QB.
The Hokies still have questions as to who will play where along the line, but Pry and his staff addressed a need in the transfer portal going into 2024 and judging by PFF's grade, it could be a very nice addition.
