Virginia Tech Football News: Brent Pry frustrated & calling for changes, Kyron Drones statement performance
By Scott Roche
Tuesday, Virginia Tech football coach Brent Pry held his weekly press conference heading into this week’s matchup at Stanford. This will be the first ACC matchup between the schools and it will be the Cardinal conference home opener. Pry spoke on a number of topics and here are some of the biggest takeaways.
Brent Pry talks ACC statement
Pry read the statement that ACC put out in regards to the overturned call Friday night and let’s just say, he wasn’t happy with it.
He said he was “confused at best” as to what the conference released. He also said he reached out to the ACC for an explanation as to why the call was overturned and said the league office used terminology that was not equal to "indisputable" in response. I’m stunned that the league would say that.
Brent Pry liked Kyron Drones performance against Miami
Quarterback Kyron Drones played very well Friday night against the Hurricanes and it was by far his best
performance of the season. He did a nice job of making throws on the run and his best and most NFL-calibar throw happened in the third quarter when he flushed out of the pocket and made a big-time throw to Ayden Grene in the end zone for a touchdown.
Pry said it was a performance that was a step in the right direction and he looked like the QB were all thought we were going to see from Week 1. Again, the Hokies offense goes as Drones goes and they’ll need him this week against Stanford to make plays with his arm and legs.
Pry calling for replay changes
One thing coaches, players, and fans would like to see is consistency with replay review. Pry said he'd like to see a more transparent process for replay and more accessible on the field/afterward. He’ll bring it up at conference meetings. Again, it’s a joke that there was an explanation given right after the call or shortly after the game in the locker room. I mean, it only sense, right?
Pry said that the Hokies have turned the page
Clearly still not happy with what happened in Miami, and rightfully so, Pry said that the team turned the page to Stanford this Saturday. He also mentioned that he reached out to some of the player's parents to do the same. Stanford offers a difficult task in a number of ways, including travel and a stout defensive line. Let’s not overlook their offense which put up 26 points at Syracuse in a last-second win two weeks ago.
Brody Meadows offers Tyler Bowen comparison
Injuries have continued to pop up along the offensive line as center Braelin Moore is “day-to-day’’ this week according to Pry. Guard Brody Meadows revealed a message that offensive coordinator Tyler Bowen offered this line going up against a talented Cardinal unit this week.
“It’s not about moving mountains, it’s about moving pebbles,’’ said Meadows.
This is a huge test for the Hokies' offensive line in terms of protecting Drones and getting holes opened for running back Bhayshul Tuten. This Stanford D-Line could be considered underrated.
John Love named specialist of the week
In the loss to Miami, Virginia Tech kicker John Love was named the ACC specialist of the week after booting field goals of 57 and 52 yards in the loss to the Hurricanes. With his big leg, it makes you wonder what might happened if instead of running a fake field goal in the third quarter, the Hokies took the points, trailed by one on the game’s last drive and they were well within Love’s range to kick a game-winning field goal instead of relying on a Hail Mary to the endzone and a replay review.
