When it comes to recruiting in college football, you win some, you lose some. Over the last month, Virginia Tech football coach Brent Pry and his staff have been winning more than losing. Monday, they got a split and in the process, lost an in-state recruit to an ACC foe.

Hours after securing four-star wide receiver Matthew Outten from Portsmouth, three-star defensive back Cole Woodson, who had Virginia Tech among his final choices, announced Monday night that he has committed to Pittsburgh.

Cole Woodson commits to Pittsburgh over Virginia Tech

Woodson picked the Panthers over Connecticut, Duke, JMU, Minnesota, Syracuse, Temple, Virginia, Virginia Tech, Wake Forest, and West Virginia. This is a big commitment for Pittsburgh coach Pat Narduzzi who keeps Woodson away from Virginia Tech, Virginia, Wake Forest, Syracuse, and Duke within the conference.

According to 247Sports, Woodson is the 56th-ranked safety and 21st-ranked recruit from Virginia, while rivals rates him as the 37th-ranked recruit from the state of Virginia. He visited Blacksburg on June 17, four days after visiting Pittsburgh and the Haymarket, Va. native finished out his visits to Virginia on June 20 before announcing his commitment Monday night.

Currently, Virginia Tech has 14 commits in the Class of 2025 and 10 from the Commonwealth. They have a bunch of commitments on the defensive side of the ball, but Woodson is a good player who would have fit right into Chris Marve's secondary.

Despite losing Woodson to Pittsburgh, Pry has done a very good job of quickly mending the relationships in Virginia in recruiting and will continue to do so. In the Class of 2025 they have Knahlij Harrell of Green Run committed at cornerback, and safety Sheldon Robinson from Woodberry Forest.
