Virginia Tech football climbs into the Top 5 in latest ACC post-spring Power Rankings
By Scott Roche
As we move along in May, things are going to be slow on the college football front until practices for the fall season begin. Spring practices and games wrapped up last month and now a lot of the attention for coaches turns to recruiting and the transfer portal.
Virginia Tech coach Brent Pry and his staff still have a couple of roster spots to fill for the 2024 season through the transfer portal, but also, recruiting visits have been scheduled for the next couple of months, with June being very busy in Blacksburg. Expectations are high for the Hokies entering the season and rightfully so with a solid mix of retainment and transfer portal additions. A lot of national college football writers are taking notice, including Chip Patterson of CBS Sports.
Virginia Tech a Top 5 team in ACC post-spring power rankings
Patterson released his ACC Power Rankings for the 2024 season following spring practices and the transfer portal closing. As expected, Virginia Tech didn’t lose any key players in the portal with the biggest name leaving being backup quarterback Tyler Wittke who recently committed to the University of Minnesota. With that said, the Hokies cracked Patterson’s Top 5 out of 17 teams.
"Brent Pry seems to have done this rebuild the "right way," and Year 3 is when we get to see the payoff from early recruiting classes that have rounded into form and smart portal additions from last offseason settling in for Year 2 with the Hokies. Kyron Drones. was one of those players who arrived in Blacksburg last year, and the steps he took in the fall have many eyeing him as one of the top quarterbacks in the league for 2024. There's a ton of returning starters on both sides of the ball from last year's seven-win team, giving the Hokies the best combination of depth and continuity that they've had in years."
There is no doubt that Pry has done things the right way, especially over the last five months, in building a roster and culture in Blacksburg. Expectations are high and with a doable ACC schedule this season that has just Clemson and Miami, two of the four teams ahead of them in these rankings, on it, making a run toward finishing first or second if healthy is without a question something that within reach this fall.
