Through the first two weeks of the 2024 season, the Virginia Tech football offense has been a rollercoaster ride. Literally. The ride has stalled out multiple times in the first half against Vanderbilt and Marshall, while it has been full-steam ahead in the second half of both games. If only they could get it running full steam ahead from the opening kickoff.

It’s no secret that the offense goes as does quarterback Kyron Drones. A lot of what they want to do is with the read option while throwing the ball downfield to open up the running game more both Drones and Bhayhsul Tuten. Pry offered an assessment of the offense and the Hokies third-year coach was spot on.

Brent Pry offers correct assessment of Virginia Tech’s offensive identity

"I think, you know, we're best when Kyron's at his best. And that's best play selection, that's Kyron, that's the offensive line, that's the wideouts, it's all of it. But we got to get Kyron going, get him comfortable. He's done that at times in the last two weeks, and I think there's been some times that, you know, he knows and we know that we've got to do better. Some of it's kind of dispersed in a couple of other spots. I don't know that it's any one thing, but we've got to play to his strengths and get him coming out the gate well."

One area where the Hokies have to do better is up front along the offensive line, which has been troubling at times. It has forced some quick decisions by Drones, who always hasn’t been able to get to his reads, and with each week that goes by, it makes you hold your breath when he gets hit.

As we have seen in the first second half of games, we get the version of the Virginia Tech offense we thought we would be getting from the opening kickoff in Nashville. Now it’s time to get that going in the first half against Old Dominion on Saturday night. The Hokies go as Kyron Drones goes. If he gets going, that will open up things for everyone else.
