Virginia Tech Football: 3 biggest things were learned in July

It was a rather quiet month for the Virginia Tech football team in July, but there were still some big things we learned about the Hokies ahead of the 2024 season.

As the calendar turns to August, we can officially say that we will have a Virginia Tech football game this month. That's right, with camp starting, the 2024 season is upon us with expectations high in Blacksburg for the Hokies.

The month of July was a mixture of being quiet and busy at times for head coach Brent Pry who went through a dead period in recruiting and enjoyed some well-earned family time. Now the third-year head coach and his staff are back at it with their team, which had a ton of retainment from the 2023 team that finished 7-6 following a Military Bowl win over Tulane in late December.

As we enter August, here are the three biggest things we learned about the Hokies over the last 31 days.

Lane Stadium Ranking & Pat McAfee is back

ESPN released their rankings for the best college football stadiums in the fall and Lane Stadium came in at No. 15. Again, I'm not saying it should have been right at the top of the rankings, however, you can make the argument that it should be in the Top 10. This season has a chance to be electric in Blacksburg on gamedays.

As for Pat McAfee, a month after making it sound like he would not be returning to ESPN College GameDay, the talk show host and former NFL punter announced that he's returning to the Saturday morning show that is on a campus ahead of one of the biggest games that weekend. Former Alabama coach Nick Saban will be joining the show, but McAfee is a tough listen a lot of the time and I've said it before and will say it again, you either love him or you don't. There's no in-between.
