Virginia Tech's Elizabeth Kitley earns ACC honors after monster game vs. NC State
By Scott Roche
It was a week that Virginia Tech fans or center Elizabeth Kitley will not forget for a long time.
Kitley singled handily had a hand in a pair of wins for Virginia Tech against Wake Forest and North Carolina State and she was rewarded for her efforts with ACC Player of the Week honors, the 11th time that the graduate student has received the honor during her time in Blacksburg and second this season.
Her biggest moment came Sunday afternoon at Cassell Coliseum against undefeated and third-ranked North Carolina State. It was frustrating first three quarters for the Hokies who trailed most of the game, struggled to get stops defensively and struggled running their offense and getting good shots and knocking them down.
In the fourth quarter and the Hokies trailing 60-49, Kitley and Georgia Amoore carried them to victory voe rthe Wolfpack during a 14-2 run to close the game over the last eight minutes. Amoore knocked down a key 3-pointer during the run and Kitley gave Virginia Tech a 61-60 lead before NC State's Saniya Rivers gave the visitors the lead with 2.1 seconds left on a reverse layup.
After both teams called timeouts, Hokies' coach Kenny Brooks drew up a game-winning play when he had Cayla King inbound the ball in front of the Virginia Tech bench and lobbed a pass cross-court to Kitley, who used an Amoore screen in the lane, and she caught the pass and was able to bank home the game-winning shot with 0.9 seconds remaining for a 63-62 victory in front of a sold-out crowd.
Kitley finished with 27 points and 12 rebounds against NC State, three days after having the same stat line in a win at Wake Forest on Jan. 4. The Hokies return to the court Thursday night hosting Miami at 8 o'clock.
