Virginia Tech coach Brent Pry takes subtle shot at ACC officiating crew
By Scott Roche
By now, the final play at Miami on Friday night has been broken down in every possible way. Seriously, it has. The common agreement around college football is that the call should have stood without conclusive video evidence that gave anyone “indisputable video evidence.”
For Virginia Tech coach Brent Pry, the frustrating part was he was given no explanation on the field or in the locker room as to why the call was overturned from a touchdown to an incomplete pass on the field. Tuesday, Pry held his weekly media session and of course, as you can imagine, the topic came up again and the third-year coach didn’t miss an opportunity to take a subtle shot.

First and foremost, the final call was not the sole reason the Hokies lost the game, 38-34. They made their own mistakes that turned out to be costly. They needed to play a near-perfect game to win on the road against the then-No. 7 team in the country. One gaffe the Hokies had, they got away with.
With 25 seconds left in the fourth quarter, the Hokies attempted a 57-yard John Love field goal and he made it. The problem was, Virginia Tech had two No. 17’s on the field and as we saw in Week 1 at Vanderbilt, that’s a penalty. Instead of it being called, the Hokies took the points. When asked about it Tuesday, Pry didn’t hold back.
“Clearly the crew missed some calls in the game,’’ said Pry.
Good for him. It’s a joke that he was not given an explanation for the call being overturned on the field or in the locker room. The ACC’s statement offered nothing and in the overall big picture, it’s still a bad look for the conference.
