By Scott Roche
There have been a lot of things going right for the Virginia Tech football team recently, but right now the biggest success that head coach Brent Pry and his staff are having is with recruiting. They have made it a point to mend fences within the state of Virginia and they have done in the Class of 2025 with 10 of their 14 current commits from the Commonwealth.
Virginia Tech has two four-star recruits from Virginia, wide receiver Micah Matthews and linebacker Brett Clatterbaugh, to headline their class, which is starting to gain national attention.
ESPN ranks Virginia Tech Class of 2025 in the Top 40
Craig Haubert of ESPN ranked the Top 40 Class of 2025 recruit class and Virginia Tech's strong last month has vaulted them into the Top 40 after previously being unranked.
"The Hokies have been able to keep some top in-state talent at home. Matthews is listed as an athlete but projects to receiver, where he can be a big-play target with excellent hands and plenty of speed. As a junior, he had nearly 90 receptions for over 1,400 yards. He is a true athlete who also plans to play baseball in college. Matthew Outten was another key in-state commit and further bolsters the receiving unit with his length and speed. With some deep threats on board, the Hokies landed a QB with a strong arm who can drive the ball downfield in three-star A.J. Brand. He threw for nearly 3,000 yards as a junior and rushed for over a 1,000. Clatterbaugh is among the top defensive prospects in the state. He displays good recognition skills and can close well and be a physical presence."

There is no doubt that there is a lot to like about the class for the Hokies. Matthews and Matthew Outten are two dynamic players on offense with quarterback AJ Brand and Kelden Ryan. Defensively, Clatterbuagh headlines the talent on that side of the ball along with safety Sheldon Robinson and edges Christian Evans and Zeke Chinwike.
Recruiting has been a huge hit for the Hokies and was a priority for Pry when he got hired and right now, it's been a huge success in the Class of 2025.
