Two days after the Virginia Tech football team played their 2024 Spring Game at Lane Stadium on April 13, the spring transfer portal opened. In the winter portal, the Hokies had a couple of players enter, but for the most part, there was a lot of retainment between the portal and players declaring for the NFL Draft.

The transfer portal closed Tuesday and players didn’t have to commit during the time frame between when it opened and closed, they just needed to enter by April 30 to be able to transfer and play in 2024. For the second time in four months, it was a successful transfer portal for Hokies’ head coach Brent Pry and his staff.

Virginia Tech has a lot of retainment in the spring transfer portal

For the second time in four months, Pry had a small number of players enter the transfer portal. Quarterback Dylan Wittke entered just four days after the Virginia Tech Spring Game and after Pry said that Pop Watson was ahead of him on the depth chart as the backup to Kyron Drones entering the fall. It was not a surprising statement as Watson outplayed Wittke on April 13 when both got a majority of the reps.

Less than a week after entering the portal, Wittke committed to the University of Minnesota for the 2024 season. Other players that entered the portal for the Hokies over the last two weeks were linebacker Tavorian Copeland, defensive back Antonio Cotman, Jr., running back Tralon Mitchell, punter Bryce LaFollette, and offensive lineman Gabriel Arena.

On the flip side, Pry has some needs with this current portal as another quarterback to join Drones and Watson, along with incomer Davi Balfort is needed, while adding another offensive lineman should be a priority. The Hokies did host UCLA transfer signal-caller Collin Schlee over this past weekend.

Regardless of what happens leading into fall camp, this should be considered a big win for Pry and his staff in terms of retainment with the portal, and adding a couple of depth pieces will set the Hokies up very well entering the 2024 season.
