Virginia Tech baseball tumbles in latest polls after Wake Forest sweep
By Scott Roche
In what was supposed to be a make-or-break weekend for the Virginia Tech baseball team turned into a disaster. Sitting at 10-2 in the ACC and peaking at No. 11 in the D1Baseball poll Top 25 last week, the Hokies were swept in Blacksburg by the Demon Deacons and as a result, they tumbled in most of the new Top 25 polls.
Virginia Tech fell five spots in the D1Baseball poll to No. 16 while Wake Forest jumped over them to No. 14. Believe it or not, they are the lowest-ranked ACC team in that poll with six ahead of them in the Top 15. Clemson checks in at No. 2, Duke No. 7, Florida State No. 10, Virginia No. 11, and North Carolina No. 13.
Just how crazy are polls? In the latest Baseball America Top 25, the Hokies check in at No. 20, and here is what they said about the weekend sweep by the Demon Deacons,
"In what was their biggest test of the season to this point, the Hokies were swept at home by Wake Forest. All three games were competitive, but Wake’s timely hitting and excellent bullpen pitching were the difference-makers. Eddie Micheletti Jr.’s grand slam Friday night was the biggest swing of the weekend, while Jacob Exum (3 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 4 K) and Grant Manning (4 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 5 K) turned in quality relief appearances. The Hokies will look to bounce back this weekend at Georgia Tech.

Virginia Tech can do nothing but turn the page to a mid-week series against a tough Liberty team before heading to Atlanta to play three games next weekend at Georgia Tech looking to get back on the winning side in the ACC against the Yellow Jackets.
