Stanford reportedly suffers a huge loss with key offensive player against Virginia Tech
By Scott Roche
All week long, there were questions as to whether or not Stanford starting quarterback Ashton Daniels was going to start against Virginia Tech or not on Saturday. He was injured in the fourth quarter last week at Clemson in a loss.
Head coach Troy Taylor did not tip his hand, as expected, during the week on the status of Daniels. Syracuse transfer Justin Lamson is the backup for the Cardinal and early Saturday afternoon, Pete Thamel of ESPN reported that Stanford was going to start Lamson at QB over Daniels, who he did report would be available if needed by Taylor.
Stanford is 2-2 this season after splitting their first two ACC games on the road, winning at Syracuse and losing to Clemson. The California native has played sparingly this season for the Cardinal, going 5-for-9 through the air for 56 yards. Nearly all of that came last week against the Tigers when he was 4-for-8 for 54 yards. He had a two-yard completion in the season-opener against TCU, a 34-27 loss at home.
In 2023, he was 38-for-88 for 504 yards and two interceptions, and no touchdown passes for Stanford. He has hurt teams with his legs in the past, rushing for 334 yards on 120 carries last season and if there is one thing that we've learned about the Virginia Tech defense in 2024, it's that they struggle against mobile signal callers.
You would have to think that Virginia Tech coach Brent Pry and defensive coordinator Tyler Bowen game planned for both quarterbacks this week and with Lamson starting, it may not be the Hokies' plans much. With Daniels being available, it would be surprising if he didn't play at some point. This is close to a must-win for the Hokies early in the season as there is.
