National writer has extremely encouraging take on Virginia Tech football for 2024
By Scott Roche
When the Virginia Tech football team kicks off the season on Aug. 31 at Vanderbilt, it will mark Year 3 of the Brent Pry-era in Blacksburg. After taking over for Justin Fuente, Pry was left with the task of bringing the Hokies back to relevance in college football after a big-time dip under their former coach.
Things didn't look good four games into last season as Virginia Tech started 1-3 after a 3-8 Year 1 with Pry, but once ACC play began, they were a different team. The Hokies won five of their eight conference game to finish 6-6 and bowl-eligible before a convincing Military Bowl victory over Tulane. Between a rout of Virginia and a win over the Green Wave, Tech got a ton of retainment for the 2024 season which raised expectations even more. Now, with a new-looking college football season around the corner, Virginia Tech is getting a lot of hype and one writer signals that the rebuild under Pry just might be coming to an end.
The Athletic labels 2024 Virginia Tech as a College Football Playoff sleeper
When the season begins, so does the new 12-team College Football Playoff format that signals a new era of college football. This season, a lot of teams have high hopes when the season begins, including the Hokies, where a team can rebound from one, maybe two losses and still play for a National Championship. Kyle Tucker of The Athletic named Virginia Tech as a team an unranked team from the Preseason Coaches Poll released last week, that could crash the CFP and he may have dropped a subtle statement signaling the rebuild is close to being over.
Tucker said that this might be the best Virginia Tech team since the Frank Beamer days and noted their returning production being the top 5 in the country as a reason for them potentially being back. He's not wrong. Quarterback Kyron Drones leads what could be an offense that will put up a lot of crooked numbers this season and a defense led by a deep defensive line that could very well be near or at the top of the ACC in sacks this season.
Factor all that in with a doable 12-game schedule and you have the recipe for a team quickly on the rise not only in the conference but the country. Let's not overlook the work that works that Pry and his staff are doing in recruiting for the future has the program in a very good place not only for 2024 but beyond.
