Thursday night, the Virginia Tech women’s basketball team beat visiting Miami, 76-52, at Cassell Coliseum to remain undefeated in ACC play at 4-0 and it’s the first time that the program has begun the season with four straights in conference play. As usual, Elizabeth Kitley recorded a double-double, the 68th of her career in a Hokies uniform.

Virginia Tech saw a 16-point halftime lead grow to over 20 points in the second half and after the game, Miami coach Katie Meier gave praise to Virginia Tech coach Kenny Brooks, his team and Hokies fans.

In her press conference after the game, Meier spoke about the job that Brooks has done in Blacksburg, the fans, and the Hokies as a team.

“They (Virginia Tech) play the right way,’’ said Meier. “It’s really cool to pull up and see people waiting in line to get into the arena. I’m proud of the community to get behind women’s basketball like they’ve done. Those are really talented players and I’d come to pay to watch them as well. They’re really good, a really fun team to watch and really connected and play basketball the right way.’’

There is no doubt that women’s basketball is on the map in Blacksburg and Sunday, they sold out the game against North Carolina State and watched as the Hokies rallied from a fourth-quarter deficit to beat the Wolfpack, 63-62, on a Kitley basket with 0.9 seconds remaining.

Brooks has put his stamp on the program and took Virginia Tech to their first Final Four last spring, but if there is one thing about Hokies fans, win or lose, they’re going to show up and support their team. Meier’s comments were classy from an opponent who witnessed one of the best gameday experiences in the conference.
