Going into the 2024 season, there are very few questions surrounding the Virginia Tech football team at various positions. The Hokies had a ton of retainment from their 2023 team on both sides of the ball, however, if there is a concern going into camp in a few weeks, it's at middle linebacker according to ESPN.

That is one area that head coach Brent Pry addressed in the transfer portal along with the defensive line and offensive line. Just who ends up emerging in camp this summer remains to be seen, but there are a couple of interesting options that Pry and defensive coordinator Chris Marve will have to choose from.

"Once a position of strength on the stout Hokies defenses of years past, middle linebacker is an area that Virginia Tech knows must improve if the Hokies are going to live up to growing expectations. Virginia Tech went into the transfer portal to bring in Sam Brumfield from Middle Tennessee State, but Jaden Keller had a great spring and could be the answer at the position. Virginia Tech has experience across the board at linebacker; if it can shore up its play up the middle, that would certainly help make a formidable front seven considering the strength of the returning defensive line."

There is no doubt that it has been a position of strength in the past for Virginia Tech and Brumfield coming over from Middle Tennessee State is an interesting player. Last season for the Blue Raiders, he was a tackling machine with 82 tackles and 46 of those were solo with 3.5 sacks. The 5-foot-11, 230-pound Pearl, Miss. native might be considered small, but he is built for ACC football.

Keller did have a good spring for the Hokies after racking up 23 tackles, eight solo in 2023 and he is poised to take the next step and make much more of an impact this upcoming season. Finding the answer at middle linebacker is big for Virginia Tech this summer as with the talent they have returning along the defensive line and the transfers they added, it would make their defense that much tougher for opponents.
