Brent Pry reveals the huge next step Kyron Drones has taken at Virginia Tech
By Scott Roche
One quarterback that really turned some heads over the last two months of 2024, was Kyron Drones. The Baylor transfer led a Virginia Tech turnaround from a 1-3 start in their non-conference schedule to 5-3 in the ACC where they became bowl-eligible.
Senior Grant Wells was named the starter ahead of the season and that wasn't surprising. Head coach Brent Pry even said that there were plays in the playbook for Drones and he ended up getting some snaps against Purdue in Week 2. One week later, he was inserted as the starter following an injury to Wells against the Boilermakers, and the rest, as they say, is history.
Once Drones got some experience with the offense and offensive coordinator Tyler Bowen was able to use his skill set, the Hokies were a different team. His stat line was impressive between throwing and running the ball and Pry spoke recently to ESPN and revealed one area that his signal caller is improving in one area ahead of the new season.

Last season Drones finished with a 17-3 touchdown to interception ratio which was better than a lot of people expected. His ability to run the ball certainly opened up the passing game and the emergence of wide receivers Da'Quan Felton, Stephen Gosnell, and Jaylin Lane also helped that cause. Pry said that his quarterback is working on being a leader, but also a key aspect in passing the football.
"He's more competitive with some of those tight-window throws. He's putting the ball where it needs to be more often. He's trying to move coverages and move guys and do some things that, maybe as a first-year starter, he didn't think about or we didn't ask him to do. And he's continuing to become the leader that he can be."

Drones has all the tools to be a better quarterback this season throwing the ball. He has Ali Jennings back at wide receiver along with the other three and he has had a whole offseason in Blacksburg getting more and more comfortable in the Hokies offense while also working out with his receivers. If he can take the next step throwing the ball moving the defenders and fitting the ball into a tight window, that's just going to Virginia Tech's offense that much better in 2024.
